On January 1, 1992, Iraq recognized the independence of Ukraine, and diplomatic relations between the states were established on December 16, 1992.
The Embassy of Ukraine in Iraq began its activities in May 2001.
In January 2003, the staff of the Embassy of Ukraine was forced to evacuate in connection with the escalation of hostilities in Iraq.
In March 2004, the Embassy of Ukraine resumed its work in the Republic of Iraq.
