The 155th anniversary of the birth of Andrey Sheptytsky, Metropolitan of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), who leaded the Church from 1901 till 1944. is marked in Ukraine in 2020 at the state level.
The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky was born on July 29, 1865 in Western Ukraine. He promoted the Greek Catholic Church in Ukraine as well as abroad during his duty service. As one of Galicia's richest persons, he generously sponsored Ukrainian cultural and educational projects and provided scholarships to young artists. In 1905 he founded the National Museum in Lviv and acquired a large number of exhibits for it. He supported Ukrainian economic activity, facilitated the opening of cooperatives. He experienced the Bolsheviks' oppression. He died on November 1, 1944 as a result of a serious illness.
