The Republic of Iraq officially recognized Ukraine on January 1, 1992, but diplomatic relations were established on December 16, 1992. The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Iraq is established since May 2001. The Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Ukraine acts since 2007.
The active bilateral dialogue between Ukraine and the Republic of Iraq before 2012, was carried out mainly in the framework of the UN General Assembly, as well as other international ogganizations.
March 15-18, 2012- the Chairman of The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine V. Lytvyn invited a delegation of the Committee on Higher Education and Research of the Council of Representatives (Parliament) of the Republic of Iraq to visit Ukraine.
May 28, 2012- regular political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq were held in Baghdad.
November 20-22, 2012- the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine K. Hryshchenko paid an official visit to the Republic of Iraq The high-level political dialogue was intensified.
February 27, 2015- the Group of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Interparliamentary Relations with the Republic of Iraq was established.
March 8, 2017- The next round of political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iraq at the level of Deputy Ministers. took place in Kyiv
November 21-24, 2017-a delegation of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on interparliamentary relations with the Republic of Iraq visited Baghdad The delegation met with the leadership of the Iraqi parliament and a number of its committees, as well as with the heads of 10 Iraqi ministries. A wide range of issues on Ukrainian-Iraqi relations was discussed.
November 27-29, 2018-the Minister of Transport of Iraq Kadim Finjan Hussein Al-Hamami visited Ukraine.
October 8-9, 2018- the People's Deputy of Ukraine, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on National Security and Defense Semen Semenchenko paid a working visit to Baghdad. An agreement to strengthen own and international security, economic growth and welfare of citizens of both countries was discussed.
April 15, 2019-Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Yegor Bozhok paid a visit to Baghdad, where he met at the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss prospects for the development of bilateral relations in the political, economic and legal spheres, as well as ways to strengthen interparliamentary dialogue. During the visit, Bozhok called on the Iraqi side to demonstrate clearer support for Ukraine in the international arena.On the same day, Bozhko met with the Commander of the NATO Training Mission in the Republic of Iraq.
December 2, 2019- a group of Iraqi-Ukrainian inter-parliamentary cooperation was formed in the Council of Representatives (Parliament) of the Republic of Iraq, which included eight deputies. The Group is headed by MP Nabil Hamza Alturfa (head of the parliamentary faction "Sairun"). Mr. Bayar Tahir Said Doski is the Deputy Chairman of the Group.
December 18, 2019-the Deputy Group of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine on Interparliamentary Relations with the Republic of Iraq was formed in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.The Group consists of 21 deputies. Andriy Bohdanets (Servant of the People faction) Thus, in 2020, the beginning of joint work of the Interparliamentary Cooperation Groups opened a new page in bilateral Ukrainian-Iraqi relations.
May 15, 2020-the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal had a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister of Iraq Mustafa Al-Kadimi.
The Prime Minister of Ukraine reaffirmed Ukraine’s desire to strengthen Ukrainian-Iraqi ties and its commitment to the comprehensive development of mutually beneficial cooperation. For his part, the head of the Iraqi government invited the Prime Minister of Ukraine to pay a visit to Baghdad to strengthen cooperation in various fields.
June 19, 2021-The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Iraq Fouad Hussein on the sidelines of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum (Turkey). The ministers discussed the development of trade, in particular the increase in Ukrainian agricultural exports to Iraq.
