January 29 in Ukraine will mark the anniversary of the Battle of Kruty, which for the Ukrainian people became a symbol of heroism and self-sacrifice of the young generation in the struggle for independence. Thanks to the victory and courage of Ukrainian soldiers, the Bolsheviks' hostile attack on Kyiv was halted for several days. At that time, negotiations were taking place between the Ukrainian People's Republic and the countries of the Quaternary Union. On February 9, 1918, the Brest Peace Treaty was signed. It meant the recognition of the independent Ukrainian People’s Republic as a subject of international relations. Important highlights: - The battle of Kruty became a successful defensive operation. The offensive of the overwhelming forces of the enemy was stopped for several days. This enabled the representatives of the Ukrainian People's Republic to sign the Brest Peace Treaty with the countries of the Quaternary Union; - The Brest peace meant the recognition of the independent Ukrainian People’s Republic as a subject of international relations; - the independence of the Ukrainian People's Republic had to be defended from Russian military aggression, initially by forces of voluntary formations; - Later, Ukrainian troops with the support of German and Austro-Hungarian (thanks to the Brest Treaty) liberated the entire territory of Ukraine from the Bolsheviks; - the events of the Ukrainian revolution testified: statehood is impossible without an army; - The courage and sacrifice of the Krutyans made them an example for future generations of defenders of Ukraine.
